"Art therapy… has served a varied and complex client group arguably better than any other single modality... I believe that... art therapy has the key, or perhaps a key, to our understanding of the mechanisms underpinning change in all kinds of psychological treatments..."
Sometimes it is hard to find the words needed to express what is happening in our lives. Working with art materials can be especially helpful when the words are not available to us.
Art psychotherapy is an expressive therapy in which clients use art materials to process and support their thoughts and feelings linked to the difficulties in their lives. Engagement with art materials in the supportive presence of an art psychotherapist enables clients to communicate, understand and reflect on their responses to life experiences, both verbally and non-verbally. The aim of art psychotherapy is to improve quality of life and personal relationships.
Art psychotherapy is a therapeutic modality that is used in many clinical settings with children, adults and families.
